Once a week, I have the responsibility of taking two children to school in the morning. This morning, the conversation was very interesting. The two children are 8 and 6 and their father is a police officer. There was an incident last night that involved their father being hurt by a person in custody who head butted him and his partner. The children proceeded to tell me that their daddy got hurt last night and that the bad person did it. I felt so bad for them because they had a sincere concern for their father because they look up to him and he is their hero.
I proceeded to tell them that their father is truly a hero and he is out there each and every single day protecting them and protecting the lives of others and that the bad person would be punished for what they did. This was the longest 7 minute ride to school ever because they kept asking why would someone hurt their father and why there are people who want to harm others in the world.
Children are very aware of what takes place in the daily walk of life. You never know when you may be in a situation where a young child asks you a fairly tough question and how you would respond. I know that this is a sensitive subject matter because children love their parents and when they sense that there is something that is harmful to them, they may feel insecure and this results in everyone rallying around the children to make sure that they do feel that sense of security.
Let’s all take time out of our busy schedules to talk and listen to a child when they just need to feel that someone loves and cares about them even when times are great and everything is going well. Have a great day!
